Grade 1-2 Reading: Stories and Comprehension Skills

This ongoing class follows a full Grade 1–2 reading curriculum using engaging, age-appropriate stories and interactive activities to help children become stronger, more confident readers. Twice a week we read short, level-appropriate texts, talk about characters and plot, practice finding key details and main ideas, make predictions, and play word games that reinforce grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Brief writing and retelling activities help students express their ideas and practice new words. Books are selected to match each child’s reading level and interests. While we often use titles from the Epic! library (subscription optional), caregivers can provide other favorite books or classroom readers. Weekly themes change regularly—examples include animal adventures, friendship and feelings, mystery and problem solving, fairy tales, and heroes—to keep lessons fresh and build broad comprehension skills. Instruction balances group discussion, guided questions, and hands-on word work. Lessons are adaptable: teachers can personalize story choices and activities based on a child’s reading level, interests, and confidence. The goal is not just improved accuracy and fluency, but also a lasting habit of reading and an appreciation of stories. This class is suitable for learners in Grades 1–2 (ages 6–8) who want structured practice with comprehension, vocabulary, and simple written responses. New stories, games, and activities are introduced as the course continues so students keep progressing and discovering books they enjoy.
