Grade 2 ELA: Full-Year Reading, Writing & Grammar

This full-year Grade 2 English Language Arts curriculum develops confident readers and writers through a balanced, structured program. Over 36 weeks, students meet twice weekly for focused, 35–40 minute live lessons that alternate between a reading-focused class and a grammar & writing class. Reading lessons use leveled, age-appropriate selections chosen to match each learner’s interests and reading level; each session includes guided discussion, comprehension practice, and vocabulary work. Grammar and writing lessons follow a progressive scope and sequence, moving from sentence building to paragraph writing, and across genres such as narrative, opinion, informative, and letter writing. Instruction emphasizes active participation in small groups, with interactive games, guided practice, and regular feedback to support revision and editing. Word study topics include prefixes, suffixes, compound words, singular/plural forms, and common irregulars to strengthen decoding and spelling. Comprehension strategies covered include predicting, inferring, summarizing, identifying main idea and details, comparing and contrasting, and using text evidence to answer questions. By the end of the year, students practice drafting, revising, and editing, apply Grade 2 grammar conventions, expand vocabulary through context, and produce organized paragraphs and short pieces across multiple genres. The class is designed to be flexible to individual growth; reading selections and pacing can be adjusted to support each child’s needs.
