Class Experience

This semester course builds foundational geographic skills: using an atlas, map elements (titles, legends, scale, compass), latitude/longitude, map projections, climate zones and special-purpose maps. Learners explore physical and human features of world regions and practice locating places using map grids and coordinates in a low-pressure, discussion-focused environment without required homework or tests.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the seven continents, five oceans and major world regions using maps and an atlas

  • Use map elements, scale, directions, map grids, latitude/longitude and coordinates to locate places

  • Compare physical, political and special-purpose maps and explain the information each conveys

  • Apply the Five Themes of Geography to describe and compare places and regions
