Teachable Machine: Train an Image Classifier (Grades 3-6)

This live, hands-on workshop introduces students to the basics of artificial intelligence by guiding them to build and train an image classification model using Google's Teachable Machine. Designed for learners in grades 3 to 6, the session emphasizes active learning over lecture. Students collect their own training images, create three labeled categories, train a model in the browser, and test it live using a webcam. Throughout the class, the instructor demonstrates how changing the training data affects model accuracy and how to improve results through better examples. By the end of the session, each student will have a working image classifier they trained themselves and a clear, age-appropriate understanding of how machines learn from data. The workshop covers foundational ideas such as what artificial intelligence and machine learning are, what training data and model accuracy mean, and real-world ways image classification is used. The experience is interactive and confidence-building, meant to spark curiosity about technology and provide a practical first step into AI. This is a single-session discovery workshop and assumes no prior coding experience.
