This course analyzes the rise, governance, expansion, and decline of major empires—covering the Ottoman Empire through later European, Asian, African, and colonial empires. Using case studies (for example Ottoman, Portuguese, Spanish, British, Russian, Austro-Hungarian, German, and Japanese empires), students study imperial institutions, economic networks, cultural exchange, and the long-term effects of empire.
