Grade 4 ELA: Full-Year Reading, Writing and Grammar

This full-year Grade 4 English Language Arts curriculum combines reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing into a carefully sequenced program. Over 36 weeks (72 live sessions total) students meet twice weekly in small groups to build skills through active discussion, guided practice, and writing workshops. One weekly class focuses on reading comprehension using age-appropriate fiction and nonfiction chosen to match each student’s interests and reading level. Learners practice summarizing, making evidence-based inferences, identifying theme and author’s purpose, analyzing character and point of view, and comparing texts. The second weekly class centers on grammar and writing. A Grade 4 grammar scope reinforces parts of speech, sentence types, verb tenses, punctuation, and usage, while writing workshops guide students through planning, drafting, revising, and editing narrative, opinion, informative, and descriptive pieces. Lessons include explicit grammar instruction, interactive activities, and targeted practice applying conventions in students’ own writing. Every class emphasizes vocabulary development through context, word parts, and discussion. Small class sizes allow time for student participation and personalized feedback on reading responses and writing drafts. Regular revision and proofreading practice help students produce clearer, more organized writing with varied sentence structures and appropriate evidence. This program is designed to prepare learners for upper elementary literacy demands by strengthening comprehension, effective expression, and grammar knowledge. Reading choices are personalized to each child’s level and interests, while the grammar and writing sequence follows a structured Grade 4 progression.
