Storytelling for Grades 3-5: Write Short Stories

This six-lesson class guides 3rd–5th graders through the process of writing a complete short story. Each lesson focuses on a practical writing skill—story structure, sensory detail, character development, planning, revising, and sharing—so students build confidence step by step. Learners will use story maps and graphic organizers to plan beginnings, middles, and endings. Hands-on activities and prompts develop vivid sensory description, dialogue, and character traits. Drafting is supported by in-class brainstorming and take-home writing exercises. Students receive personalized feedback to help them revise for clarity, detail, and flow. The course culminates with each student completing a short story. Sharing is optional: students may read aloud in class or submit their work for written feedback.
