Ready, set, code. In this one-time class, complete beginners get hands-on experience writing real Python to build a Turtle racing game. A starter project with a racetrack, finish line, and racing turtles is provided so learners focus on the coding steps that make the game run. Students will: choose which turtle they think will win, make each turtle move at random speeds, repeat movement with a loop, compare final positions, and announce the winner. The lesson explains every line in simple, beginner-friendly language and students code along with the instructor, run the program, and fix small errors together. The class typically involves writing roughly ten lines of real code that implement the prediction, movement, randomness, loop, and winner-detection logic. After building the core game, learners can customize turtle colors, adjust movement speed, and change race length to see how those changes affect outcomes. Because movement uses random numbers, each run creates a different race result, reinforcing cause and effect in programs. No prior Python or coding experience is required. The pace and explanations suit ages 10 to 13 (grades 5–6), and the instructor supports testing and simple debugging so students leave with a working program and ideas for personalizing it.

The instructor demonstrates the finished game, introduces Python and the Turtle library, and shares a starter file. Students code along to add prediction, random movement, loops, and winner detection, then run races, test, and apply simple customizations.
Understand that Python programs execute instructions in sequence
Store and use player information with variables
Use loops to repeat actions
Use random numbers to create unpredictable movement
Implement simple winner-detection logic
No prior coding or Python experience required. Comfortable using a keyboard and mouse.
