This 16-class 8th grade math course strengthens number system and algebra skills to build a reliable foundation for Algebra 1. The course begins with rational and irrational numbers, helping learners identify and compare types of numbers, find square and cube roots, and estimate irrational values on a number line. Next, students explore integer exponents and the laws that govern them, then apply those ideas to scientific notation for working with very large and very small quantities. The course moves into algebraic expressions and equations: students practice translating verbal phrases into expressions, simplifying using order of operations, and evaluating expressions. A sequence of lessons focuses on solving multi-step linear equations, including cases with variables on both sides and equations that include fractions or decimals. Students learn methods for solving equations with rational coefficients and develop reasoning to check solutions. Learners are introduced to linear relationships by reading and creating tables, graphs, and equations. Lessons connect patterns and algebraic models to real-world word problems so students can use equations to represent and solve practical situations. Throughout the course, instruction includes guided examples, visual representations, targeted practice problems, and activities that develop mathematical reasoning. The final class offers a comprehensive review and mixed practice to reinforce the major concepts covered across the entire course.
