Heritage Spanish: Reading and Writing for Native Speakers

Many heritage speakers speak Spanish fluently at home but have never learned to read and write it confidently. This ten-week course builds literacy skills on top of the Spanish learners already know.

Learners read engaging texts, master spelling and written accents and write regularly, with feedback that respects and builds on their home Spanish. They also learn when to use formal and informal language.

How classes work

Each week starts with a short live demo of the new idea, followed by guided practice while the teacher checks in with every learner. Classes end with a small challenge to try before next time.

What we'll cover

• Week 1: Reading Check-In – Read a short text together, discuss it and set personal goals.

• Week 2: Spelling and Sounds – Practise tricky spelling patterns such as b/v, s/c/z and silent h.

• Week 3: Accents – Learn the rules for written accents and apply them in sentences.

• Week 4: Reading Stories – Read and discuss a short story by a Latin American author.

• Week 5: Writing Paragraphs – Write well-structured paragraphs with topic sentences.

• Week 6: Formal Spanish – Compare formal and informal language and write a formal message.

• Week 7: Reading News – Read a short news article and summarize it in writing.

• Week 8: Writing an Opinion – Write a short opinion piece with reasons and examples.

• Week 9: Culture and Identity – Read and write about heritage, family and identity.

• Week 10: Final Portfolio – Revise the best writing from the course and present it.

Best for learners who already have solid foundations in this subject. Learners need a device with a camera and microphone for live classes.
