Grade 5 English Language Arts: Full-Year Reading, Writing & Grammar

This full-year Grade 5 English Language Arts course strengthens reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing through structured, interactive lessons. Students meet in a small group twice weekly for two 35–40 minute live classes across a 36-week curriculum. Each week includes one focused reading class and one grammar and writing class, giving learners repeated chances to practice skills and receive individualized feedback. Reading classes use age-appropriate fiction and nonfiction texts selected to match each student’s interests and reading level. Lessons emphasize comprehension strategies—identifying theme, analyzing characters and plot, comparing texts, determining author’s purpose and point of view, making evidence-based inferences, and using context clues to learn new vocabulary. Discussions and guided activities help students explain their thinking and cite textual evidence. Grammar and writing classes follow a sequenced Grade 5 scope that builds sentence variety, parts of speech, verb tense usage, punctuation, and common conventions. Students practice fixing sentence fragments and run-ons, using pronouns and modifiers correctly, and applying conjunctions and prepositions for clearer writing. Writing workshops guide students through planning, drafting, revising, and editing narratives, opinion pieces, informative essays, and descriptive paragraphs while focusing on organization, evidence, and word choice. Classes use interactive games, collaborative tasks, and regular writing practice to keep learners engaged. Small class sizes allow for targeted feedback, conferencing, and scaffolded support so each student can progress at their own pace.
