Class Experience

This course teaches drum pad fundamentals: grip and posture, reading basic percussion notation (quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes and rests), rudiments and accents, and performance skills. Lessons include practice segments, showmanship activities, a Drumming Olympics game, a confidence report, and a capstone performance to consolidate Level 1 skills.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate correct stick grip and basic drum pad technique

  • Read and perform basic percussion notation (quarters, eighths, sixteenths, rests)

  • Identify and apply fundamental rudiments and accents

  • Prepare and deliver a short rhythmic performance and self-assess confidence

  1. Drum sticks

  2. Drum pad or something to drum on

  3. Pencil (ready to use)

  4. Printed or digital copy of the weeks' cadences for class discussion
