Design Challenges: Introduction to Engineering and Simple Machines

An introductory engineering class exploring the engineering process and six simple machines. Students learn foundational concepts like levers, pulleys and buoyancy, then apply them in hands-on weekly design challenges such as building bridges, elevators, sailboats and windmills.

Materials needed:

• small blocks (such as Jenga pieces or legos)

• dry noodles

• craft sticks​ (popsicle sticks)

• several sheets of paper

• tape​

• string​

• plastic (or styrofoam) cups​

• scissors​

• a ruler​ (yardstick is also beneficial)

• marshmallows (playdough or clay can substitute)

• playdough or clay​

• paper clips​

• straws​

• cardboard (it can be from a cereal box)

• aluminum foil

• sink, basin, or other container to hold water for placing objects to float
