Class Experience

A practical consumer math course that teaches real-world financial math topics including wages, taxes, deductions, budgeting, checking and savings, interest (simple and compound), sales tax, unit pricing, coupons/rebates, and markdowns. Lessons emphasize step-by-step demonstration followed by guided student practice and independent problems; worksheets provided for ongoing practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Solve consumer-oriented math problems typical of a Semester 1 consumer math course

  • Compute payroll figures including gross pay, deductions, and net pay

  • Prepare and use a personal budget and reconcile checking transactions

  • Calculate simple and compound interest, sales tax, unit price, and markdowns
