This 10-session chess course is designed for neurodivergent children, including those with ADHD and autism, who benefit from predictable structure and flexible pacing. Chess is used as a tool to practice sustained attention, sequencing, planning, rule following, and calm decision-making. Lessons are paced to reduce overwhelm and build confidence through repetition and scaffolded practice. Each session includes clear, step-by-step instruction, short puzzles to practice attention and working memory, and supportive interaction that honors individual learning styles. Early lessons introduce the board, piece movements, and simple pawn concepts with plenty of guided practice. Middle lessons focus on exchanges, points, basic check and checkmate patterns, and short one-move puzzles to strengthen pattern recognition and impulse control. Later sessions introduce special rules like castling and promotion, outline simple opening routines, and reinforce legal versus illegal moves. The course finishes with review, accessible puzzles, and calm gameplay to celebrate progress. The class supports executive functioning skills by practicing planning and sequencing, and promotes emotional regulation through predictable routines and positive reinforcement. No prior chess experience is required. The course is appropriate for children ages 6 to 11, covering Grades 1 to 4. Learning can be supported with either an online interface or a physical chessboard when available.
