Class Experience

This course strengthens core 3rd-grade math by teaching multiple strategies for multiplying and dividing and the three multiplication properties. Lessons use visual models (arrays, equal groups, base-10, expanded form), teacher modeling, guided practice, and gradual moves toward independent work to build procedural fluency and conceptual understanding.

Learning Outcomes

  • Use repeated addition, arrays, equal groups, base-10, and expanded form to multiply

  • Use repeated subtraction, arrays, equal groups, fact families, and remainders to divide

  • Apply the commutative, associative, and distributive properties to multiplication

Prerequisites

Students should be able at add and subtract one and two digit numbers before starting this class. They should also have some knowledge of what multiplication and division are but it is fine if they still cannot multiply and divide alone.

Materials needed:

Students will need to bring a paper and pencil or whiteboard and marker to use when solving problems. Calculators are not allowed and students should also not be using a multiplication chart.
