Class Experience

This course explores veterinary laboratory methods and small-animal surgical procedures, including identification of external parasites, hematology and cytology techniques, surgical suite preparation, types of surgeries, sterilization, and post-operative cleaning. Lessons use PowerPoints, discussions, demonstrations, videos, and in-class hands-on practice with teacher-provided supplies; optional learner presentations are part of the wrap-up.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe steps involved in small-animal surgical procedures

  • Identify common external parasites affecting cats and dogs

  • Explain basic hematology and common laboratory tests used in small-animal practice

Prerequisites

Materials needed:

Lesson 2 - new microscope slides and "fake blood" (I use gel food coloring, but halloween fake blood, or even ketchup will work!)

Lesson 3 - needed for "instrument book" after class project- ability to print several pages from a document provided, notebook or large index cards (to create book), tape/glue/scissors

Lesson 4 - a "patient" to scrub ( ideas : a squash, cucumber, plastic doll- must be able to get wet.) a very small bowl of soapy water and one of clean water, paper towels, (and gauze squares if possible no need to buy them if you don't have them, just cut up some paper towel squares)

Lesson 5 - gloves with a long enough wrist to be able to make a cuff. (can be plastic, or knitted)

Lesson 9- a cloth napkin or piece of fabric that is a similar size, 6-8 pieces of flatware/silverware, making tape (scotch tape ok if needed)
