Class Experience

This semester course covers U.S. history from the late 1700s through the 1870s, emphasizing interpretation from multiple sources and viewpoints. Instruction prioritizes analysis of causes and effects rather than memorizing dates. Live classes use narratives, visuals, discussions, videos, games, virtual field trips, and interactive activities, with optional assignments to reinforce learning outside class.

Learning Outcomes

  • Improve understanding of U.S. geography and historical causes and effects

  • Explain motivations for Manifest Destiny and westward movement

  • Evaluate causes and effects of key events such as the Louisiana Purchase, Indian Removal Act, Gold Rush, and Dred Scott

  • Critique the effectiveness of Reconstruction efforts
