Class Experience

This semester civics course surveys the three branches of the U.S. government, separation of powers and checks and balances, and key constitutional elements including the First Amendment and other amendments. Students will examine both notable and problematic aspects of the Constitution and compare U.S. institutions with systems like the U.K., electoral systems, and the European Union.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the roles and functions of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the U.S. government

  • Explain checks and balances and separation of powers among the three branches

  • Describe major provisions of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, including the First Amendment

  • Compare key features of the U.S. system with other governments, including the U.K., electoral systems, and the European Union
