Science of Everything: Atoms to Life, Earth and Space

This ongoing Science of Everything club treats science as one connected story. Learners begin with the smallest building blocks—atoms and molecules—and move through chemistry, life science, Earth systems, energy, forces, space, and engineering. The course is organized as a year-long rotation with 57 weekly lessons that build understanding through visuals, teacher demonstrations, guided thinking activities, and hands-on exploration. Lessons are discussion-based and designed to help students understand why things work, not just what happens. Units include matter and chemistry (atoms, molecules, states of matter, and chemical change); the transition from chemistry to life (cells, energy, and digestion); plants and photosynthesis (structure, pollination, adaptations); animals and ecosystems (classification, food webs, life cycles, endangered species); human body systems (digestive, muscular, circulatory, nervous); weather and climate; space science (solar system, moon phases, gravity, stars); forces and motion (types of forces, friction, simple machines, Newton’s laws); energy (forms of energy, light, sound, thermal); Earth science (layers, rocks, soils, plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes); electricity and magnetism (conductors, circuits, magnetic fields); environment and sustainability (resources, pollution, human impact); and hands-on engineering and STEM challenges (bridge design, balloon cars, catapults, egg drop, inventors’ projects). The course wraps with applied science activities like kitchen chemistry and solar oven experiments. Classes stand alone so learners may join at any time while still seeing how each topic connects to the larger scientific picture. Emphasis is on observation, explanation, modeling, and asking questions to build scientific thinking skills.

Class Experience

Weekly classes combine discussion, visual explanations, teacher demonstrations, and guided thinking activities. Each session focuses on a single topic within the broader sequence, so students can join at any time. Activities and short hands-on challenges reinforce concepts and connect topics across science disciplines.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand that matter is made of atoms and molecules and how those build materials and living things.

  • Explain how energy and forces interact with matter to cause motion, change, and biological processes.

  • Recognize connections among cells, organisms, ecosystems

  • Earth systems, and space.

  • Develop scientific thinking by asking questions, making observations, using models, and explaining ideas.
