GEM-ology: Science of Crystals, Minerals & Gemstones

This hands-on STEM class examines what crystals, minerals, and rocks are, how crystals form, and how minerals are used in modern technology. Lessons also discuss historical and cultural meanings attached to gemstones, encouraging scientific observation, creative projects, and respectful exploration of traditions without endorsing metaphysical claims.

No prior knowledge needed. This class supports a wide range of learners through visual aids, creative expression, flexible participation, and hands-on engagement. Reading and writing are welcome but not required.

Materials needed:

We’ll keep things simple! Most supplies are basic household or art materials:

Everyday Supplies:

--Pencil and eraser

--Crayons, markers, or colored pencils

--Blank paper or a notebook (optional: folder to collect journal pages)

--Scissors and glue stick

--Optional: Playdough or modeling clay for crystal sculpting

--Optional Show-and-Tell or Observation Items: Any rocks, crystals, or gemstones from home (real or pretend!)

--A magnifying glass, if available

For the Crystal-Growing Experiment (choose one method):

--Option 1: Salt + warm water + spoon + glass jar

--Option 2: Sugar + warm water + spoon + glass jar

--Option 3: Borax + warm water + spoon + pipe cleaner + glass jar

Optional: String, pencil or stick to suspend crystal
