Class Experience

This interactive middle school course covers major early U.S. historical periods: Indigenous cultures before colonization, European exploration, the colonial era, the Revolution, nation-building, westward expansion, and the Civil War. Lessons use maps, primary sources, images, and activities to develop historical thinking, analysis of multiple perspectives, and evidence-based discussion.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain major events, people, and ideas shaping the United States through the Civil War

  • Analyze maps, images, and primary sources to understand historical context

  • Compare perspectives to identify how events affected different groups

  • Develop historical thinking through questioning, discussion, and evidence-based conclusions

Prerequisites

Materials needed:

A notebook or paper for notes and activities

A pencil or pen

Colored pencils or markers (optional, but recommended for maps and projects)

Throughout the course, learners will complete interactive activities and discussions. During the final weeks of class, learners will also create a culminating history project that demonstrates their understanding of the people, events, and ideas studied throughout the course. Project guidelines and expectations will be provided in class, and learners may choose to create a digital presentation (such as Google Slides or PowerPoint) or a poster board presentation using materials they have at home.
