Class Experience

This course examines eerie, scandalous, and tragic historical episodes in an age-appropriate, sensitive manner. Lessons combine storytelling, source analysis, guided discussion, and interactive activities to separate myth from fact, evaluate evidence, and consider the social impact of traumatic events.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze unsettling historical events to identify causes, effects, and cultural impact

  • Distinguish myth and folklore from historical fact using primary and secondary sources

  • Evaluate diaries, testimony, photographs, and artifacts to interpret past events

  • Develop historical empathy by considering perspectives of those who experienced tragedy

  • Discuss sensitive topics respectfully and connect past events to present issues
