Creative Writing: Write an Illustrated Chapter Book (Ages 10-15)

This intermediate creative writing course guides students aged 10 to 15 through the full process of turning an idea into a finished illustrated chapter book. Over 12 lessons, learners study techniques authors use—character arc, compelling openings, scene-level tension, realistic dialogue, immersive worldbuilding, and satisfying endings—and apply each technique directly to their own work. Each lesson introduces a focused writing skill and then gives students time to write and revise a chapter that uses that skill, so the book grows chapter by chapter. The course emphasizes revision: students revisit earlier chapters to plant clues, add backstory, refine pacing, and polish language. Mentor text examples and guided activities illustrate each technique. Personalized instructor feedback and opportunities to give and receive peer feedback help students strengthen their stories. Students also develop basic illustration choices for their chapter book, learn how to integrate images with text, and prepare their manuscript for publication. By the end of the course each student will have a complete, illustrated chapter book they can share with family and friends. This class is best suited to students who have completed a beginner creative writing course or who already write stories and want to advance their skills and complete a multi-chapter project.
