Creative Writing and Publishing: Write Your Story (Ages 8-13)

This 10-lesson summer camp guides young writers through the full process of creating, revising, and publishing an original story. Students ages 8-13 will explore genres, learn the key parts of a story, and practice techniques that make writing vivid and engaging. Instruction combines short lessons with examples and slides, brief video clips for inspiration, group discussion, and hands-on guided writing time. Over the course, each participant will draft and revise a piece of writing—choosing a format such as a picture book, short story, or novel excerpt—and prepare a polished final version. The class also includes a step-by-step introduction to StoryJumper, a child-friendly publishing site, so students can publish their finished work online if they choose. No prior publishing experience is required; students should have basic English reading and writing skills. Teaching emphasizes practical, age-appropriate strategies: crafting characters and conflict, building a plot arc, using sensory details and figurative language, writing natural dialogue, and strengthening theme through revision. By the end, every student will have a revised manuscript and the knowledge to publish it on a kid-friendly platform.
