Class Experience

This four-session course covers clarinet basics: safe assembly, reed and mouthpiece placement, producing a good tone, tonguing, and the initial notes typically learned in first-year band. Students practice note reading, simple melodies, and basic rhythm values, with an expectation of personal practice between lessons.

Learning Outcomes

  • Assemble the clarinet and position the reed correctly

  • Produce a clear sound and use tonguing techniques

  • Play basic clarinet notes and simple melodies and read basic rhythms

Prerequisites

Students must have access to a clarinet at home for the classes and to practice on. They should also have suitable reeds - ideally 2.0 or 2.5 Vandoren or Rico reeds to make a great sound.

Materials needed:

Bb clarinet

2.0 or 2.5 Bb clarinet reeds. Recommend Vandoren or rico brands.

Good audio settings on zoom.
