Class Experience

This course examines how government operates at federal, state, and local levels and how citizens engage with public life. Topics include foundations of democracy, comparative governance and Indigenous traditions, checks and balances, media and transparency, voting and civic roles, policymaking, environmental and local governance, and civil rights. Students produce discussion responses, short assignments, and a culminating civic portfolio.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain foundations of democracy and compare with other governance models

  • Identify roles of federal, state, and local governments and describe checks and balances

  • Evaluate civic information sources and practice communicating with public officials

  • Synthesize learning into a civic portfolio and present research or creative work

Prerequisites

Materials needed:

We will have art projects where supplies will be recommended, but not required. I will supply PDF workbooks that can be referenced online or printed.
