Students build three-dimensional molecular models with a hands-on modeling kit to visualize bonding, bond angles, symmetry and polarity. The course progresses from simple two- and three-atom molecules to allotropes of carbon, common organic molecules (acetic acid, glucose) and biomolecules such as amino acids and ATP, while discussing chemical and physical properties of each model.

Class Experience

Students build three-dimensional molecular models with a hands-on modeling kit to visualize bonding, bond angles, symmetry and polarity. The course progresses from simple two- and three-atom molecules to allotropes of carbon, common organic molecules (acetic acid, glucose) and biomolecules such as amino acids and ATP, while discussing chemical and physical properties of each model.

Learning Outcomes

  • Build molecular models that illustrate single, double and triple covalent bonds

  • Explain physical and chemical characteristics of constructed molecules

  • Use models to examine bond angles, symmetry and polarity

  • Construct a range of molecules from simple (water, CO2) to larger organic and biomolecules (glucose, ATP)

  • Identify how atomic arrangement affects material properties, including carbon allotropes
