Class Experience

This eight-week class guides students through making a completed T‑shirt quilt from their own shirts. Instruction includes selecting and preparing shirts, fusing interfacing, cutting uniform blocks, planning layout, sewing the quilt top, sandwiching and basting, quilting or tying, and attaching binding, with demonstrations and Q&A.

Learning Outcomes

  • Construct a finished quilt from personal T‑shirts using standard quiltmaking steps

  • Apply techniques fusing interfacing, cutting uniform blocks, piecing and pressing quilt rows

  • Complete sandwiching, basting, and basic quilting or tying, then attach binding to finish the quilt

This is a class for kids who love to learn by doing! This class a very hands-on designed to help with small motor skills, attention to detail and following instructions. There is plenty of room for personal creativity in this class.

Prerequisites

Students must be able to use scissors to cut straight lines, rulers to accurately measure. They will need some experience using an iron, and a sewing machine. Younger students or those with little experience may need some adult assistance.

Materials needed:

To create an Heirloom quilt you will need the following materials, tools, and supplies:

Basic Sewing Kit

T-shirts (at least 12–15 for a lap quilt)

Medium weight fusible interfacing (to stabilize T-shirt fabric)

Rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat -preferred (or good sharp scissors) ruler and chalk markers or heat erasable pen

Sewing machine, thread, needles, pins and/or clips

Iron and ironing board, spray water bottle

Sashing fabric to go between the T-shirt squares, (optional), backing fabric, quilt batting, binding fabric to coordinate with the backing.
