Halloween Chemistry: Safe Experiments for Ages 8-10

This four-class Halloween chemistry course is designed for curious 8–10 year olds who enjoy hands-on experiments with clear, age-appropriate scientific explanations. Each session mixes teacher-led demonstrations with guided student experiments using safe, common household materials. Lessons emphasize careful observation, making predictions, recording results, and simple explanations of the science behind each reaction. Every class follows the same structure: a short question to frame the session, a safety briefing and materials check, a teacher demonstration of the key reaction (for visually powerful or higher-risk demos the teacher performs and shows results up close), guided student experiments, group discussion of observations and underlying concepts (for example pH, gas formation, or polymers), and a mini challenge or extension to try at home. Activities include fizzing baking soda and vinegar potions, testing acids and bases with red cabbage indicator juice, making glowing slime using highlighter-infused water, and a teacher demonstration of a foaming reaction. Students who prefer to observe can still participate by predicting outcomes, recording observations, and joining the discussion. Safety rules are emphasized: no tasting or inhaling of materials and handwashing after each activity. Parents are asked only for optional, one-time prep tasks (for example, preparing red cabbage indicator juice) and otherwise do not need to assist during class. Printable observation prompts and clear step-by-step guidance are provided on request. Each lesson ends with a short “What we learned” summary and an optional at-home extension suitable for family exploration.
