Class Experience

This course explores how creatures like unicorns, centaurs, phoenixes, and hippogriffs in the series draw on older myths and folkloric traditions. Learners compare traditional versions with the books’ adaptations, investigate the symbolic roles creatures play (for example purity, prophecy, rebirth, honor, or danger), and synthesize how fantasy reshapes inherited meanings for new stories.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the mythological or folklore roots of several magical creatures in Harry Potter

  • Compare older creature traditions with modern fantasy adaptations in the series

  • Explain how creatures can symbolize larger ideas such as purity, prophecy, rebirth, honor, or danger

  • Discuss magical creatures as meaningful parts of storytelling rather than just fantasy decoration

Prerequisites

Materials needed:

No special supplies are required beyond the class handouts. A pencil or pen will be helpful for completing the Creature Origins Tracker and session notes. Having access to the Harry Potter books is helpful, since we will refer to creatures from the series, but students do not need to bring the books to participate successfully.
