Chess for Preschoolers Level 1: Story-Based Beginner Class

This playful Level 1 class introduces preschoolers to the chessboard through stories, music, puppets, and movement. Over 10 weeks, children meet friendly piece characters and learn the board’s colors and simple piece moves by pretending to be the pieces—hopping like a bunny or marching like a rook. Lessons are wiggle-friendly and built around short, active activities that combine songs, puppet play, and easy props to make concepts memorable. Sessions emphasize turn-taking, listening, and cooperative play through gentle beginner games such as “rescue the king” and group story plays. Activities are designed to keep young children engaged while reinforcing sharing, following simple directions, and basic spatial awareness. There is no expectation of sitting still for long periods—movement and play are central to learning. By the end of the course, children will recognize board colors and simple piece behaviors, feel comfortable with basic turn-taking, and gain confidence playing in a group. The course finishes with a light celebration to reinforce progress and positive social experiences.
