An eight-week pre-algebra course for grades 6-8 that connects math variables to Lua code. Learners write expressions, solve equations and use formulas to power mechanics in their own Roblox game.

Paid once.
Variables in math and variables in code have a lot in common. In this eight-week course learners in grades 6 to 8 strengthen pre-algebra skills by connecting them to Lua programming in Roblox Studio.
Learners begin with expressions, writing math expressions on paper and then turning them into Lua code that calculates a player's score. They learn the order of operations and test it by predicting what their code will output. Next they explore one-step and two-step equations, solving them by hand and then using code to check their answers. Learners see how equations can describe game rules, such as the number of coins needed to reach a level.
In later weeks learners work with formulas, such as distance equals speed times time, and use them to control moving platforms and timers. They explore inequalities by coding doors that open only when a value is greater than a target and graph simple linear patterns from game data.
The final project is a mini game where every mechanic is powered by an equation the learner wrote. Learners explain the math behind each feature in a short presentation.
The teacher explains each math idea clearly before coding and provides practice problems each week. Learners need no prior coding experience, but should be comfortable with fractions and negative numbers.
Each class starts with a pre-algebra lesson and practice problems. Learners then apply the idea in Lua code in Roblox Studio and test their predictions.
Week 1: Expressions – Write expressions and turn them into Lua score code.
Week 2: Order of Operations – Predict and test outputs of multi-step expressions.
Week 3: One-Step Equations – Solve by hand and check with code.
Week 4: Two-Step Equations – Use equations to describe level requirements.
Week 5: Formulas – Use speed, distance and time to control platforms.
Week 6: Inequalities – Code doors that open when values pass a target.
Week 7: Linear Patterns – Graph patterns from game data.
Week 8: Equation-Powered Game – Present a mini game driven by learner-written equations.
Write and evaluate algebraic expressions
Apply the order of operations
Solve one-step and two-step equations
Use formulas and inequalities to control game mechanics
Explain the math behind code-driven game features
Comfortable with fractions, decimals and negative numbers. No coding experience required.
