Roblox Lua Functions and Loops: Code Smarter Games

Once kids can write a few lines of Lua, the next challenge is writing code that does more work with less effort. This eight-week course focuses on two of the most important ideas in programming: functions and loops.

Learners begin by grouping code into functions with clear names, then pass in parameters so one function can handle many situations. They use return values to calculate things like damage, speed or points. In the second half of the course they explore loops. While loops create blinking lights and countdown timers, and for loops spawn rows of coins or build staircases automatically. Learners also loop through the children of a folder to change many parts at once, a technique real Roblox developers use every day.

Every class ends with a small game mechanic built from that day's concept, and those mechanics come together in a final mini game. Examples include a timed coin rush, a disappearing platform path and a color-changing dance floor.

The teacher explains each concept with visual diagrams before coding, then live-codes while learners follow along. Learners are encouraged to tweak values, predict what will happen and test their ideas. This course suits learners who have finished an introductory Lua course or already know variables and events.

How classes work

Classes start with a short visual explanation of the concept, followed by guided live coding in Roblox Studio. Learners then customize the mechanic on their own with teacher support and share results at the end.

What we'll cover

• Week 1: Why Functions Matter – Group repeated code into named functions and call them.

• Week 2: Parameters – Pass values into functions so one function handles many situations.

• Week 3: Return Values – Calculate points, speed and damage with functions that return results.

• Week 4: While Loops – Build blinking lights and countdown timers with while loops.

• Week 5: For Loops – Spawn rows of coins and build staircases automatically.

• Week 6: Looping Through Folders – Change many parts at once by looping through a folder's children.

• Week 7: Building Game Mechanics – Combine functions and loops into a timed coin rush and disappearing path.

• Week 8: Mini Game Showcase – Polish a final mini game and present how its code works.

Learners should know basic Lua: variables, properties and Touched events. Roblox Studio must be installed.
