Roblox Lua Basics: Write Your First Scripts

This four-week course is a gentle first step into text coding for kids who already enjoy Roblox and are curious about how games actually work. Instead of only building with blocks, learners open the Script editor in Roblox Studio and write real Lua code from the very first class.

Each week introduces one core idea and applies it right away. Learners start with properties, changing a part's color, size and transparency through code. Next they meet variables and use them to store values such as a score or a player name. In week three they connect code to the game world with events, making parts react when a player touches them. The final week combines everything into a small playable challenge with a working point counter.

The teacher live-codes every example, explains each line in plain language and pauses often so learners can type along and test. Mistakes are treated as part of the process, and learners practice reading error messages in the Output window to fix them.

By the end of the course, each learner has a small Roblox place with several working scripts they wrote themselves, plus the confidence and vocabulary to continue into longer Lua courses. No prior coding experience is needed, only basic comfort with a mouse and keyboard.

How classes work

Each class opens with a short demo of the day's idea. Learners then type the code themselves in Roblox Studio while the teacher checks in and helps debug. Classes end with a mini challenge to try at home.

What we'll cover

• Week 1: Properties and Your First Script – Open the Script editor and change a part's color, size and transparency with code.

• Week 2: Variables – Store values like scores and names in variables and update them.

• Week 3: Events and Touch – Use Touched events so parts react when players step on them.

• Week 4: Mini Challenge Game – Combine properties, variables and events into a playable point-collecting challenge.

No coding experience needed. Learners should be able to use a mouse and keyboard and have Roblox Studio installed before the first class.
