Class Experience

Mars is one of the most exciting places in our solar system to explore. In this eight-week course learners combine space science and coding to build a Mars exploration game in Roblox Studio.

Learners begin by learning key facts about Mars, including its red dust, thin atmosphere, giant volcano and weaker gravity. They shape a Martian landscape with craters, canyons and a landing site, then adjust the game's gravity to match Mars and feel the difference. Next they code a simple rover that players can drive and an oxygen meter that slowly drops outside the habitat, so players must plan trips carefully.

In the middle weeks learners create science missions based on real Mars research, such as collecting rock samples, searching for signs of ancient water and setting up solar panels. They code mission checkpoints and a mission log that records discoveries. Learners also build a habitat with an airlock, a greenhouse and a communications dish and discuss what astronauts would need to survive.

In the final weeks learners polish their game with sound effects and a mission complete screen, then present it to the class along with three Mars facts players learn while playing. The teacher explains both the science and the code step by step.

By the end learners will have a space game grounded in real science. Basic Lua knowledge is helpful but not required.

How classes work

Each class pairs a Mars science topic with a building or coding step. Learners test their game and share discoveries at the end of class.

What we'll cover

  • Week 1: Mars Facts and Landscape – Learn Mars features and shape craters and canyons.

  • Week 2: Mars Gravity – Adjust gravity to match Mars.

  • Week 3: Rover – Code a drivable rover.

  • Week 4: Oxygen Meter – Code oxygen that drops outside the habitat.

  • Week 5: Habitat – Build an airlock, greenhouse and comms dish.

  • Week 6: Science Missions – Code rock sampling and water search missions.

  • Week 7: Mission Log – Record discoveries in a mission log.

  • Week 8: Mission Complete – Polish and present the game with Mars facts.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe key features of Mars and its environment

  • Model Mars gravity and terrain in a game

  • Code a rover and oxygen meter

  • Design missions based on real research goals

  • Explain what astronauts need to survive on Mars

Prerequisites
