Class Experience

Most students were never taught how to take notes; they simply copy what is on the board and hope it helps later. This one-time class introduces three proven systems that turn notes into a tool for understanding and review, and gives students hands-on practice with each one on real content.

We start with Cornell notes, the classic system for lectures and textbook reading. Students practise splitting the page into notes, cues and summary, then use the cue column to quiz themselves. Next comes Zettelkasten, a system used by researchers and writers that links small, atomic notes into a web of ideas. Students learn how to write one idea per note, add their own words and connect notes so that essays and projects grow out of them. Finally, we explore mind maps for brainstorming, visual learners and big-picture review.

In the last part of the class, students compare the three systems side by side and build a personal plan: which system to use for which class, and how to combine them, for example Cornell notes in biology lectures feeding into a Zettelkasten for history essays. The teacher shares paper and digital templates for each system.

This class suits motivated students who already take notes but want a more powerful, organised approach, especially those heading into high school or managing heavier reading and writing loads.

How classes work

The single 75-minute session is hands-on: the teacher demonstrates each system, then students practise it on a short reading or video clip and share examples. Students can work on paper or in any note-taking app.

What we'll cover

  • Class 1: Three Note-Taking Systems in Practice – Practise Cornell notes, Zettelkasten and mind maps on real content, compare them and build a personal note-taking plan.

Learning Outcomes

  • Take Cornell notes and use the cue column for self-testing

  • Write and link atomic notes in a simple Zettelkasten

  • Create clear mind maps for brainstorming and review

  • Choose the right note-taking system for each subject

  • Organise notes so they are easy to find and review

Prerequisites

Parents Often Ask

It suits motivated students aged 13 to 17 who already take notes in class and want a stronger system. Younger teens who read grade-level nonfiction comfortably will do well.

Either works. The teacher demonstrates on paper and shares templates, and students can practise in any note-taking app they already use.

A notebook or loose paper, pens in two or three colours and some index cards or sticky notes for the Zettelkasten practice.

The class focuses on hands-on practice of the core of each system rather than every detail. Students leave with templates and a personal plan so they can keep building the habit on their own.

Students leave with practice notes in all three systems, paper and digital templates and a plan for which system to use in each of their classes.
