Because “go find something to do” rarely works as well as parents hope.

Because “go find something to do” rarely works as well as parents hope. There is a particular kind of parental optimism involved in saying:

“Why don't you go play by yourself for a while?”

You imagine your child disappearing into their room, becoming absorbed in Lego, emerging 90 minutes later with an extraordinary creation and perhaps having learned something about engineering along the way. What actually happens is often: “Can I watch YouTube?” “No.” “Can I have a snack?” “You just had one.” “Where's my blue marker?” “I don't know.” “Can you come help me?” “I’m working.” “There's nothing to do.” All within seven minutes. If this sounds familiar, I don't think the answer is simply to find better activities.

  • There are actually two problems to solve:
  • What can my child do independently?
  • and, more importantly,
  • How does my child become better at doing things independently?
  • Those are different questions.
  • A list of 50 activities may solve this afternoon.
  • The second question can change the next several years.

Independent play is a skill, not a personality trait

Some children naturally disappear into imaginary worlds for hours. Others want another person involved in everything. Some are excellent at beginning activities but abandon them quickly. Others need help starting but can stay absorbed once they get going. I wouldn't label one child “independent” and another “not independent.” Independence develops. Harvard's Center on the Developing Child describes executive-function skills as the mental abilities that help us plan, focus attention, remember instructions, switch between tasks and manage our actions. Children aren't born with fully developed versions of these abilities; they develop them over time.

Independent activity quietly asks a child to use many of them at once: What am I going to do? What do I need? How do I start? What happens when something goes wrong? Should I keep going or change my plan? That's quite a lot hidden inside the phrase: “Go play.” The American Academy of Pediatrics has long recommended protecting child-driven, unscheduled play. Its clinical guidance notes that self-directed play gives children opportunities to make decisions, discover interests, solve problems and develop creativity; its more recent play report, reaffirmed in 2025, emphasizes agency and executive-function development.

So yes, we want independent activities. But I would think of them as training wheels for independence, rather than ways to keep children occupied while adults work.


The first mistake: choosing an activity that secretly needs a parent

A lot of online “independent activities for kids” are hilarious once you read the instructions. You will need: cardboard food colouring a glue gun six paper cups cornstarch balloons a funnel three things you definitely don't own. Then: “Adult supervision required.” That's not an independent activity. That's a parent project with a child standing nearby. For this article, I would use a much stricter test.


A genuinely independent activity should ideally pass four questions:

  • 1. Can the child start it without me?
  • 2. Can they continue when something small goes wrong?
  • 3. Can they clean up most of it themselves?
  • 4. Is there enough depth to keep them engaged beyond five minutes?
  • An activity doesn't need to pass all four.
  • But the more it does, the more useful it is to a working parent.

Think in four levels, not one giant activity list

I'd organize independent activities according to how much time—and how much independence—they can realistically support.

  • Something the child begins choosing without being prompted
  • That last category is the real prize.
  • Because the ultimate goal isn't:

“I have 75 tricks for keeping my child occupied.”

It's:

“My child has things they genuinely like doing.”

Let's build toward that.


LEVEL 1: 10–20 minute independent activities

These are useful when you need to finish a call, cook dinner or simply have a cup of tea without being asked to referee something. The trick is to make them specific enough to start. “Draw something” is vague.

“Design the world's strangest pet” gives the brain somewhere to go.


1. The Impossible Drawing Challenge

Instead of colouring pages, give a prompt: Design a house for a giraffe. Invent a school on the Moon. Draw a vehicle that can travel underwater AND fly. Design shoes for someone with eight feet. Invent an animal that could survive in Antarctica and the desert. The child isn't simply drawing. They have to solve a problem. For older children, add: Label five design features and explain why each is necessary. Now the same activity has moved from drawing toward design thinking. Setup: Almost none Mess: Low Independent: High Can go deeper: Very high


2. The 20-Object Challenge

  • Pick a random household object.
  • Paper clip.
  • Spoon.
  • Cardboard tube.
  • Plastic cup.
  • Ask:

“How many different uses can you invent for this?”

Not necessarily practical ones. A spoon could become: catapult miniature boat musical instrument tiny shovel puppet balance scale. Twenty ideas is harder than five. The first few are obvious. Then the child's brain has to stretch. This is essentially divergent thinking disguised as silliness.


3. Paper Engineering

Give the child: 10 sheets of paper. Then one challenge: Build the tallest tower you can without tape. Tomorrow: Build a bridge between two books that can hold 20 coins. Next: Build something that can protect an egg dropped from a small height. Now paper has become engineering material. This is exactly the kind of open-ended play the AAP recommends: simple materials often allow more imagination and exploration than toys that dictate how they should be used.


4. Make a Secret Code

  • Ask the child to invent an alphabet.
  • A = △ B = ○ C = ♢
  • Then write you a secret message.
  • Older child?
  • Make it harder.
  • Instead of simple substitution, invent rules:
  • Every vowel moves forward one letter.
  • Every second word is backwards.
  • Numbers represent certain letters.
  • Now the child has accidentally wandered toward:
  • patterns logic encryption algorithms.
  • Tomorrow, you reply in their code.
  • That is often enough to keep the game alive.

5. “Can You Beat Your Own Record?”

This works surprisingly well for children who don't naturally gravitate toward crafts. Choose: How many socks can you pair in three minutes? How many baskets can you score in 20 attempts? How long can you balance on one foot? How many times can you bounce a balloon without letting it touch the floor? How quickly can you complete a puzzle? Then record the result. Tomorrow: beat yourself. Suddenly an ordinary activity has: measurement goals iteration.


LEVEL 2: 30–60 minute activities

  • This is where activities become more interesting.
  • The child isn't merely completing a task.
  • They are making decisions.

6. Create a Comic Strip

  • Don't say:
  • “Write a story.”
  • That can feel enormous.
  • Say:
  • Make a six-box comic called The Worst Day in a Superhero's Life.
  • Or:
  • The Day My Teacher Turned Into a Chicken
  • When My Dog Took Over the School
  • The Last Human on Mars
  • Six boxes.
  • Beginning.
  • Problem.
  • Escalation.
  • Ending.
  • A child who loves this can move from:
  • six panels
  • one-page comic
  • recurring character
  • comic book
  • digital illustration
  • animation.
  • That's exactly what we want from these activities:

somewhere to go next.


7. Design a Board Game

This is one of my favourite independent activities for roughly 8+ because it can become unexpectedly sophisticated. Give the child: paper cardboard dice coins/buttons. Then say: Make a game we can play tonight. They need to decide: What is the objective? How does someone win? Is there luck? Is there strategy? Can players interfere with each other? How long should a game last? Then the family plays it. It will probably have terrible rules. Perfect. Don't redesign it for them. Ask: “Was that rule fair?” “Did we have any interesting decisions?”

  • “Why did the game take 45 minutes?”
  • Version 2 comes tomorrow.
  • Now the child is doing something professionals do:
  • prototype → test → observe → improve.

8. Build a Marble Run

  • Use:
  • cardboard books paper tubes tape if allowed boxes.
  • Goal:
  • Get the marble from the highest point to a cup.
  • Then add constraints:
  • must change direction three times
  • must include a jump
  • must take at least five seconds
  • must trigger something else.
  • The moment you add constraints, the activity becomes much deeper.

9. Make a Stop-Motion Movie

  • This is one of the screen activities I would actively encourage.
  • A tablet or phone becomes a production tool.
  • Use:
  • Lego clay toys paper characters.
  • Start with:

10-second movie.

That is important. Do not begin with: “Make a film.” Too big. Ten seconds. Then: 30 seconds. Then add: storyboard titles sound dialogue editing. A bored child can unexpectedly discover: animation storytelling photography editing sound design. This is exactly why I don't like dividing all children's activities into: SCREEN = BAD and NO SCREEN = GOOD. The better question is often: What role does the child have in front of the screen? Consumer? Or creator?


10. Build an Escape Room

This deserves to appear repeatedly in our content because it is extraordinarily expandable. Tell your child: Lock a prize in a box—or hide it somewhere—and make three clues I have to solve to find it. They might create: riddles codes math clues hidden messages maps physical puzzles. Then you play. The first version may take you four minutes. Now challenge them:

“Can you make one that takes me 20 minutes?”

  • The child has to think about:
  • difficulty sequence information player behaviour story.
  • That's basically beginner game design without a computer.

11. Become a Detective

Set up a mystery prompt: Someone ate the last cookie. Suspects: Dad Mum sibling dog. Child creates: clues suspect interviews timeline evidence. Or reverse it: the child creates the mystery and the parent solves it later. That version is much more interesting because designing a solvable mystery requires thinking from someone else's perspective.


12. Build a Miniature World

  • Give them:
  • cardboard Lego paper clay recyclables.
  • Choose:
  • Mars colony
  • underwater city
  • dinosaur sanctuary
  • future school
  • tiny country
  • zombie-proof house.
  • Then ask:
  • Where do people sleep?
  • Where does food come from?
  • What happens to rubbish?
  • How do they travel?
  • What happens in an emergency?
  • You have just turned:
  • “build something”
  • into:
  • architecture systems thinking environmental science urban planning.
  • For older children, add a budget.
  • Now it gets serious.

LEVEL 3: One-hour-plus activities

This is where a child begins becoming genuinely absorbed. And it is where parents should resist one temptation:


Don't interrupt a good obsession just because today's activity is “finished.”

If your child has spent 90 minutes making a city, you do not necessarily need a new activity tomorrow. Ask: “What's missing from the city?” Depth is often better than novelty.


13. Make a Family Magazine

  • Not just a newspaper for one afternoon.
  • Create an actual publication.
  • Choose a name:
  • The Agarwal Times
  • The Saturday Report
  • The Family Gazette
  • Then departments:
  • News Sport Reviews Interview Puzzle Comic Advertisement.
  • Issue #1.
  • Then:
  • Issue #2 next Saturday.
  • Now the child has something powerful:

a recurring project.

  • They can interview grandparents.
  • Review a movie.
  • Create a crossword.
  • Photograph something.
  • Design the cover.
  • Eventually use Canva or another publishing tool.
  • A simple boredom activity has become:
  • writing journalism design photography editing project management.

14. Create a Restaurant

  • This one can occupy children for hours.
  • Not:
  • “Pretend to cook.”
  • Build the whole business.
  • Choose:
  • restaurant name logo theme menu.
  • Calculate prices.
  • Design placemats.
  • Create a reservation sheet.
  • Make signs.
  • Older children can calculate:
  • ingredient cost selling price profit.
  • Then open for dinner.
  • Parents are customers.
  • Now imaginative play has expanded into:
  • design math hospitality entrepreneurship.

15. Create a Museum

  • Pick an obsession.
  • Dinosaurs.
  • Space.
  • Football.
  • Cars.
  • Harry Potter.
  • Insects.
  • Minecraft.
  • The child becomes curator.
  • They need:
  • five exhibits information cards museum map tickets guided tour.
  • Older child?
  • Add:
  • audio guide QR codes digital presentation interactive quiz.
  • Now the child isn't merely consuming information.
  • They have to decide:
  • What should someone else understand?
  • That is a much deeper form of learning.

16. Make a Documentary

  • A surprisingly good project for children roughly 9+.
  • Possible subjects:
  • A Day in the Life of Our Dog
  • How Grandma Grew Up
  • The Secret Life of Our Garden
  • Why My Brother Is Obsessed With Football
  • The History of Our Family
  • Now the child needs:
  • questions interviews shots narration editing.
  • If this catches, it can lead to:
  • filmmaking journalism photography editing storytelling.
  • Again:
  • boredom → activity → project → interest.

17. Invent Something That Solves an Annoying Problem

Ask: “What is annoying in our house?” Shoes everywhere? Pens disappear? Phone falls over? Nobody remembers to water plants? Remote controls vanish? Now: design a solution. First draw it. Then build a prototype from cardboard. Then test it. Then make Version 2. Children spend a lot of time solving problems adults invented for them. Worksheets. Questions. Assignments. There is something powerful about saying:


Find your own problem.

That is the beginning of invention.


18. Build a Cardboard Arcade

Collect cardboard boxes. Create several games: ball toss mini basketball marble maze target game homemade pinball. Then add: tickets scores prizes signage. Older child? Set a price per game. Give every family member $20 in pretend money. Now the child needs to think about: pricing probability difficulty customer experience. This is one of those activities that can easily occupy several days.


LEVEL 4: Multi-day projects

  • This is the category working parents should pay more attention to.
  • Because the most useful independent activity is often not:
  • “What can my child do today?”
  • It's:

“What are they already in the middle of?”

A child with an ongoing project wakes up knowing what comes next. That changes everything.


19. The Seven-Day Invention Challenge

  • Day 1:
  • Find a problem.
  • Day 2:
  • Draw three solutions.
  • Day 3:
  • Choose one.
  • Day 4:
  • Build prototype.
  • Day 5:
  • Test.
  • Day 6:
  • Improve.
  • Day 7:
  • Present.
  • The parent does not manage the project.
  • You are the audience.
  • At dinner:
  • “Show me where you've reached.”
  • That small distinction matters.
  • You are interested without taking ownership.

20. Build a City Over a Week

  • Day 1:
  • Map.
  • Day 2:
  • Homes.
  • Day 3:
  • Transport.
  • Day 4:
  • Schools/hospitals.
  • Day 5:
  • Parks/businesses.
  • Then introduce a crisis:

Population doubles.

What changes? Next:


There's a drought.

Next:


Cars are banned.

Suddenly the cardboard city has become a systems simulation.


21. Write and Publish a Book

Not “write a story.”


Publish a book.

That destination makes it feel different. Plan: title cover characters chapters/pages illustrations. For a younger child: 8-page picture book. Older child: comic or short chapter book. Print it. Staple/bind it. Add: About the Author. Put it on the bookshelf. Children experience their work differently when it becomes a finished object.


22. Learn One Magic Trick a Day for a Week

This is a good example of an activity that doesn't look educational. Learn. Practice. Perform. Then another. By Day 7: create a ten-minute magic show. What has the child actually practised? fine motor control memory presentation persistence audience awareness confidence. Not everything valuable needs to look academic.


23. Build a Chain-Reaction Machine

  • Start with:
  • Make five things happen in sequence.
  • A ball rolls.
  • Hits blocks.
  • Blocks knock a car.
  • Car hits a cup.
  • Cup releases another ball.
  • Then:
  • 10 steps.
  • Then:
  • This is wonderfully frustrating.
  • Which is part of the point.
  • Children have to debug a physical system:
  • Why does Step 7 keep failing?
  • That's engineering thinking without a coding screen.

24. Conduct a Real Experiment

Not necessarily a school science experiment. Ask a genuine question.


Which paper airplane design flies furthest?

  • Create three designs.
  • Five flights each.
  • Measure.
  • Record.
  • Average.
  • Graph.
  • Change one variable.
  • Try again.
  • Or:
  • Which material keeps an ice cube frozen longest?
  • Which bridge design holds most weight?
  • Does a basketball go further at different angles?
  • Which part of the garden has the most insects?
  • Now the child isn't “doing science.”
  • They're trying to answer something.
  • That distinction matters.

LEVEL 5: Activities that can become real interests

This is the section I think will distinguish Undoschool's content from generic activity sites. When something catches, follow it. Don't keep searching Google for tomorrow's activity.


If they keep drawing...

  • Don't simply buy another colouring book.
  • Try:
  • character design
  • comic creation
  • perspective
  • digital illustration
  • animation
  • graphic design.
  • Possible pathway:
  • DRAWING → COMICS → DIGITAL ART → ANIMATION → DESIGN

If they keep building...

  • Try:
  • Lego engineering
  • bridges
  • architecture
  • mechanisms
  • CAD
  • 3D design
  • robotics.
  • Possible pathway:
  • BLOCKS → STRUCTURES → MECHANISMS → ENGINEERING → 3D DESIGN

If they love Minecraft or Roblox...

Move from: playing to: building to: designing experiences to: coding. Possible pathway: PLAYER → BUILDER → DESIGNER → CODER → GAME DEVELOPER We've already explored this pathway in depth because it is such a good example of following an existing obsession instead of fighting it.


If they keep making stories...

  • Try:
  • comic books
  • short stories
  • screenwriting
  • podcasts
  • stop motion
  • animation
  • filmmaking.
  • Possible pathway:
  • STORY → SCRIPT → PERFORMANCE → FILM → DIGITAL CREATION

If they love puzzles...

  • Try:
  • logic puzzles
  • escape-room design
  • chess
  • cryptography
  • programming
  • mathematical problem solving.
  • Possible pathway:
  • PUZZLES → LOGIC → STRATEGY → ALGORITHMS → CODING

If they love numbers and sport...

  • This is one parents often miss.
  • Don't automatically give them more math worksheets.
  • Track:
  • football results
  • basketball statistics
  • cricket scores
  • player performance.
  • Put the data into a spreadsheet.
  • Graph it.
  • Ask questions.
  • Eventually:
  • Python.
  • Possible pathway:
  • SPORT → STATISTICS → SPREADSHEETS → DATA → PYTHON → DATA SCIENCE
  • A future data scientist may not begin by saying:
  • “I love data science.”
  • They may begin by wanting to know which player is actually better.

If they love animals...

  • Try:
  • observation journal
  • species identification
  • habitat design
  • wildlife photography
  • animal behaviour research
  • citizen-science projects.
  • Possible pathway:
  • ANIMALS → OBSERVATION → BIOLOGY → ECOLOGY → SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

But how do I get my child to actually START?

This is often the real question. You can have the world's greatest list. The child says: “No.” The problem may be activation, not interest. This is where a little scaffolding helps. Child Mind Institute describes a useful parenting transition from being the child's constant “fixer” toward becoming more of a consultant—supporting children enough to succeed while increasingly letting them solve problems themselves. The AAP similarly distinguishes between adult-controlled activity and guided play, where the child retains agency while an adult creates conditions or asks questions that help the exploration go further.

  • So don't necessarily say:
  • “Go make a board game.”
  • Sit down for three minutes.
  • Ask:
  • “What should the game be called?”
  • “What's the goal?”
  • “What do you need?”
  • Then say:

“Great. Come get me when Version 1 is ready to test.”

Leave. That tiny beginning can be enough.


The 5-minute launch

I would actually teach this technique to parents. When a child cannot begin independently:


Minute 1

Choose the activity.


Minute 2

Gather materials.


Minute 3

Agree on the first goal.


Minute 4

Child begins.


Minute 5

Parent leaves. Then:

“I'll come back in 25 minutes. Show me what happened.”

  • Over time:
  • five minutes becomes three.
  • Then one.
  • Then:
  • “You know how to get started.”
  • That's how independence grows.

Create an “Independent Shelf,” not a Pinterest craft cupboard

This can make a huge practical difference. The shelf should contain things the child is allowed to use without asking. For roughly 7–11-year-olds, perhaps: plain paper coloured paper markers/pencils tape child-safe scissors string index cards cardboard Lego/building materials puzzles notebook ruler dice old magazines recyclables. Don't make it beautiful. Make it accessible. Because if making something requires: asking Mum for scissors asking where the cardboard is asking whether glue is allowed asking where the tape went,

the activity is not independent. The environment is doing part of the parenting.


And create a digital creator folder

This is something I rarely see in activity articles. If the child has computer/tablet access, make a folder called:


MAKE SOMETHING

  • Inside, age appropriately:
  • Scratch
  • drawing app
  • stop-motion app
  • music-making tool
  • presentation/design tool
  • video editor
  • writing document.
  • Now when the child asks:
  • “Can I have screen time?”
  • sometimes the answer can be:

“Sure. Are you consuming or making today?”

  • Not every screen session needs to be productive.
  • Children are allowed entertainment.
  • But creating a visible alternative changes the menu.

How long should a child be able to play independently?

I wouldn't use an internet chart that says:

“Eight-year-olds should independently play for 63 minutes.”

Children vary too much. Age matters, but so do temperament, familiarity with the activity, tiredness, environment and how much independent play they have previously practised. Harvard's play resources deliberately shift the adult's role as children grow: activities for younger children involve more adult interaction, while later activities allow adults to step back and give children's independence more room to develop. So measure progress against your own child. If today: 8 minutes. Aim for:

  • Then 20.
  • Then 30.
  • Don't turn independent play into another performance metric.

What if I'm working from home?

This deserves its own article next, because the situation is different. But one principle is worth introducing here:


Children interrupt less when they know when connection is coming.

  • Instead of:
  • “Don't interrupt me.”
  • try:

“I'm working until this timer ends. Then we have ten minutes together.”

Give them a project. Set the timer. Work. Reconnect. Then another block. For many children, predictable attention works better than vague unavailability. For younger children, expectations should be much lower; Child Mind Institute notes that preschoolers can play independently for brief periods but still need adults to structure the day, help set up activities and support transitions. An eight-year-old and a four-year-old cannot reasonably be given the same independence plan.


A practical menu to put on the fridge

  • When your child says:
  • “What can I do?”
  • don't give them 50 options.
  • Give them six.

MAKE

Draw, write, film or invent something.


BUILD

Make something that stands, moves or works.


SOLVE

Puzzle, mystery, code or challenge.


MOVE

Run, dance, throw, balance or beat a record.


EXPLORE

Investigate something you're curious about.


CONTINUE

Go back to something you already started. I especially like the last one. CONTINUE. Children live in an activity culture that constantly offers something new. Sometimes the most valuable question is:

“What have you already started that could become better?”

That's how hobbies develop.


The independent-activity ladder

This would be the main visual in the published article:

  • “I can complete something myself.”

What I would do at home this weekend

  • I wouldn't print this article and announce:
  • “Here are 24 educational activities.”
  • That is a reliable way to make every one of them unattractive.
  • I'd do three things.
  • First, create one easily accessible making area.
  • Second, offer one genuinely interesting challenge:

“Build an escape room for us. We'll try it at 6 PM.”

And third: go away. Don't supervise the creativity out of it. The AAP's research review makes a fascinating point here: when adults demonstrate exactly how a toy works, children may explore fewer of its other possibilities than children who are given more freedom to investigate. Adult support is valuable, but too much direction can narrow exploration. Give enough help to get moving. Then become the audience.


The bigger goal isn't keeping them busy

There will still be afternoons when none of this works. Your child will reject the cardboard. Reject the Lego. Reject the book. Reject your ingenious engineering challenge. And ask: “Can I just watch something?” Sometimes the answer can be yes. We aren't trying to optimize every minute of childhood. But over months and years, I'd want to see something gradually changing. From: “What can I do?” to: “I have an idea.” From: “Come help me.” to: “Come see what I made.” From: “I'm bored.” to: “I'm still working on that thing.”

That is why independent activity matters. It isn't really about giving parents an uninterrupted Zoom call. It is about a child gradually discovering: I can start things. I can solve things. I can make things. And I don't always need somebody else to tell me what happens next. That is independence. And occasionally, somewhere inside all that cardboard, tape, code, football data and badly designed board games, a child finds something they want to become very, very good at.


Worth reading if you want to go deeper

The American Academy of Pediatrics' clinical report The Power of Play is one of the strongest foundations for this approach. It discusses child-directed and guided play, executive function, agency and why adults should scaffold exploration without taking it over.
