Improv is theatre without a script: performers make up scenes on the spot by listening closely and building on each other's ideas. This 90-minute masterclass gives learners an extended session to really settle into improv, moving from silly warm-ups to confident scene work in one afternoon.
We begin with energy and focus warm-ups that get everyone laughing and moving. Next, learners practise the golden rule of improv, 'yes, and', through partner games where they accept an idea and add something new. We then play classic scene games such as status swaps, emotion switches, freeze tag and one-word stories, with plenty of turns for everyone.
Leadership is built right into the class. In the second half, each learner takes a turn as 'game leader', explaining the rules of a game, choosing players and calling the scene changes. They learn to give clear instructions, keep the energy up and make sure every player gets a moment to shine.
The class finishes with a short improvised showcase in small groups, followed by a reflection on what made the best scenes work. Learners leave with a toolkit of games they can play with friends, family or their school drama club.
This class suits learners with a little stage or classroom experience who are ready for longer scenes. Everyone is encouraged, and nobody is forced into a scene before they are ready.
The teacher introduces each game with a quick demonstration, then learners play in pairs and small groups on camera. Breaks for water and stretching are built in, and the session ends with a showcase and group feedback.
