The ACT Reading section asks students to read several passages and answer questions under real time pressure, and many strong readers run out of time rather than understanding. This crash course gives teens a clear, repeatable approach they can practise on their own afterwards.
We begin with a quick overview of how the section is organised and the main passage types: literary narrative, social science, humanities and natural science, plus paired passages. Learners then practise passage mapping: reading actively, noting the main idea of each paragraph in a few words, and marking shifts in tone or argument.
Next we sort questions into types such as detail, inference, main idea, vocabulary in context and author's purpose, and practise question triage, deciding which to answer first and when to move on. All passages and questions are original practice material written in the style of the ACT, not official test questions.
The final part of the class is a short timed passage followed by a calm debrief. Teens compare how they used their time and build a personal pacing plan. This is an advanced-level session; it does not promise a score, but it gives a solid strategy to keep practising.
The class is designed for shy or test-anxious learners too. Cameras can stay off during timed work, answers can be shared in the chat, and nobody is put on the spot.
The teacher models each strategy on screen, then learners try it on a short original passage and compare answers in chat or aloud. The class ends with a timed practice passage and a personal pacing plan.
