Economics in the News Club

Why do prices rise? What causes recessions? Who decides interest rates? In this weekly club teens read short, current news articles and use economics ideas to make sense of them.

Each session introduces one concept, such as supply and demand, inflation or trade, and the group discusses different viewpoints and evidence. Learners sharpen their analysis, debate and reasoning skills while becoming better-informed citizens.

How classes work

Each weekly session opens with a quick warm-up and a short new idea, then learners work on the session's challenge together while the teacher guides the group. Sessions end with time to share. New learners can join any week because each session stands on its own.

What we'll cover

• Session theme 1: Supply and Demand – Use supply and demand to explain a price change in a recent news story.

• Session theme 2: Inflation – Discuss what inflation is, how it is measured and who it affects most.

• Session theme 3: Jobs and Wages – Explore labor market news and what drives wages up or down.

• Session theme 4: Global Trade – Debate a current trade issue using economic evidence on both sides.
